Gutter Repair vs. Replacement in Sacramento: How to Decide
Every fall we stand in a driveway in Carmichael with a homeowner who has a list: a drip at the front corner, a sag over the garage, a downspout the lawn crew flattened. The question is always the same. Fix the list, or take the whole thing down? Here's the rule we use, with the prices that make it a real decision rather than a sales pitch.
The three-part rule
Age and material. Aluminum gutters last 25–30 years in Sacramento's climate; the summer heat is hard on sealant but not on the metal. Galvanized steel lasts 15–20 before rust comes through the paint along the bottom seam. Vinyl gets brittle in our sun and is usually done by 12. If your gutters are aluminum and under 20, repair is on the table. If they're steel with rust bleeding through, or vinyl with a chalky finish and cracked corners, they're at the end regardless of what today's problem is.
Sectional or seamless. Look along the run. A joint every ten feet means sectional, and every joint is sealant that has spent seven dry months a year baking. Sectional gutters more than 15 years old leak at more seams than you can see from the ground. Sealing three this year means sealing three more next year.
Fraction failing. Count the problems against the runs. One or two spots on a house with eight runs: repair. Problems on a third or more of the runs: replace. A repair list on a 1970s ranch house in Arden-Arcade that runs past $800 is, in our experience, a down payment on a system that's failing everywhere at once.

What replacement costs
Seamless .032 aluminum installed runs $11–$19 per foot in the Sacramento area — California pricing, about 15–25% above what a national cost article will tell you. A single-story home with 160 feet and four downspouts is $1,800–$2,600; a two-story with 220 feet and six downspouts, $2,900–$4,200; tile roofs add $2–$4 per foot for the hangers. Doing the math on a real house
Take a 1968 ranch in Carmichael: 170 feet of sectional aluminum, spike hangers, two corners dripping, one 30-foot run sagging under a valley oak, a crushed downspout, and soft fascia at the back corner.
- Repair: two corners $450, re-hang $300, downspout $180, ten feet of fascia $150. About $1,080, and you still own 55-year-old sectional gutters with fourteen other seams.
- Replace: 170 feet of 5-inch seamless with 3x4 downspouts at $14, $2,380, plus the same $150 of fascia. About $2,530, with a finish warranty and one-year workmanship.
The repair is cheaper this year. Over five winters it usually isn't, because the next corner starts in January and the next sag in the following December. That's the calculation we put on the estimate, both numbers, and let you make.
When repair is clearly right
- Aluminum, seamless, under 20 years old, one problem
- A tile-roof gutter in Roseville or Folsom that's sound but hung too high — that's a re-hang, not a replacement, and it's on the tile roof page
- Storm damage to one run on an otherwise good system
- A house you're selling next spring, where a $400 repair satisfies the inspector and a $3,000 replacement doesn't come back in the price
When replacement is clearly right
- Steel with rust through the paint, anywhere
- Vinyl, chalky and cracked
- Sectional over 20 years old with more than two leaking seams
- Fascia rotten along more than one run, since the gutters have to come down anyway to fix it
- A gutter system that was never sized or placed for the roof — one downspout on 60 feet, or hung behind a tile lip on every run
The seasonal wrinkle
In Sacramento the calendar matters as much as the math. Repairs can be done any week of the year. Replacement in September gets you a date before the rain; replacement first requested in late October is competing with everyone who waited, and the install may land in December, after the first storms have already done what they were going to do.
