Sacramento's housing is old enough that the original gutters are done. The 1950s–70s ranch homes across Arden-Arcade, Carmichael, Tahoe Park and South Land Park mostly still carry sectional aluminum or galvanized steel, hung with spikes, seamed every ten feet. Sizing for Sacramento
Our rain is long, not violent. An atmospheric river drops an inch or two over a day rather than two inches in an hour, so the gutter doesn't need Gulf Coast capacity. What it needs is a clear path for a lot of water carrying a lot of leaves. That changes the sizing:
- 5-inch gutters with 3x4 downspouts on most single-story homes. The larger downspout matters less for flow than for not choking on a wad of wet sycamore leaves.

- A downspout every 35–40 feet rather than one per run. Under trees, the second downspout is the backup for when the first one plugs at 2 a.m. in a storm.

Materials
Aluminum in .032 gauge — heavier than the .027 most crews run — in 25-plus baked-on colors matched to your trim or stucco. What it costs
Seamless aluminum installed runs about $11–$19 per linear foot in the Sacramento area. How long does gutter replacement take?
One day on most homes. We measure and quote on the first visit, the coil is ordered in your color, and the crew forms and hangs the gutters on site. Large two-story homes with many corners, or tile roofs where a lot of first-course tile has to be lifted and reset, occasionally run into a second morning; we'll say so beforehand.
Should I get 5-inch or 6-inch gutters in Sacramento?
Five-inch with 3x4 downspouts handles a single-story roof in our rain. Six-inch is worth it on two-story homes, steep roofs and any run under a big tree, where the wider mouth keeps leaves from bridging across and the extra capacity covers the one downspout that's plugged. Do new gutters come with a warranty?
The aluminum finish carries the manufacturer's warranty, typically 20 years or more against peeling and fading, which matters with our summer sun. Our workmanship — leaks, pitch, hangers, tile reset — is covered for the first year, which takes it through a full rain season, and we come back to adjust anything that needs it.
Can you install gutters on a house with exposed rafter tails?
Yes. Mid-century homes in South Land Park, Sierra Oaks and parts of Carmichael have open eaves with no fascia board. We use roof-strap hangers under the first course of shingles or add a fascia board first, and both options go on the estimate with a price.
